The idiom runs in England too -- the green eyed monster (jealousy).  But
I'm still hesitant about this, and (pace Jon, and despite no support from
the text) I'd go for the pale (dried) grass reading.

The speaker (Sappho) is shocked, stunned, horrorstruck -- her tongue has
snapped (Campbell) -- but jealous?
