I've written plays, and libretti for opera, and had poems set to music.

The satisfaction all depends on the synergy and mutual trust of the
people involved.  Full stop.  When it works, it's fantastic.  When it
doesn't, there is little more distressing.  For me, the real joy is that
my work in the hands of others doesn't seem to be _my_ work any more,
which is hugely liberating.
