Finnegan - ya wldn't have a reference for "every cliche was once a good
lick" wld ya? I'd like to use it in my classes, alongside Orwell's cliches
are 'dying metaphors'.

In teaching I've been using a little ladder of the power of words in
language, first pinched off Glen Phillips of this list:

Nouns

Verbs

Adjectives

Adverbs

Propositions, conjunctions, articles, pronouns, etc.

This list I give to students mainly for editing purposes: 'look at your
draft with this heirarchy in mind' I tell them.
