Ally,

Frontchannelling is sending a message to the list, so that everyone on
the list receives it. Backchannelling is sending a message just to a
single member's email address, so that only they see it. If someone asks
via the list for information that is only likely to be of interest to
themselves, it's a good idea to send it backchannel to avoid boring
other list members. For example, I probably should have sent my reply to
Matthew about OO gauge scales backchannel, as it's unlikely to be of
gripping interest to many other list members. (I didn't, partly in order
to be able to make this point.)

Backchannelling is a bit fiddly, because if you simply reply to a
message it will be sent by default to the whole list. You need to be
careful when sending a reply that you *don't* want everyone on the list
to see, that you don't send it frontchannel by mistake.

I don't much like the terms either, but there you go.

Enjoyed the Lear take-off.

Regards,
