The new edition of The Oxford Book of English Verse includes The Crime of the Ancient Mariner but omits the notes. The editor, Christopher Ricks, doesn't explain why -- presumably he thought them an irrelevant excresence and wanted to tidy up the page. I think the poem looks shockingly incomplete without them. Yes I know the notes were added later but so were the notes to The Waste Land. But then Ricks doesn't include the notes to The Waste Land either. In fact he doesn't include The Waste Land itself. Oh well I was getting tired of Western civilization anyway. ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
