The Centre for Learning and
Teaching in Art & Design (CTLAD) in collaboration with The Research
Support Office of The London Institute, is offering part-time short courses
for post-graduate students and supervisors:
Monday 25th - Wednesday 27th

Introduction to Postgraduate
Supervision in Art and Design
a two day introductory
course, which reviews good practice in research degree supervision at MPhil
and PhD levels, focusing on art, design and communication practice. It
is intended primarily for educators, supervisors (actual or potential.
The course will cover projects with a visual/'making' emphasis using
practice-based methods and with a significant submission of work in other
than written form. Experienced supervisors and programme managers
contribute to this course.
Introduction to postgraduate supervision
includes:
(i) managing the research
process and an outline of research
methodologies;
(ii) assembling
supervisory and examination teams, their qualifications and
experience
(iii) project planning stages and
outcomes, the student student/supervisor
relationship
(iv) types of research, including
practice-based
Wednesday 20th - Wednesday
27th September 2000
Introduction to a research
degree in Art & Design
A six day course for
potential students. The course will outline the methodological
framework for research in these areas, including practice-based. There
will be discussion of sources and sessions on developing
proposals
Introduction to a research degree
includes:
(i) specialist presentations from
experienced researchers and supervisors, and current research
students
(ii)
defining the difference between MPhil and PhD, and identifying an
appropriate institution, supervisors and
examiners
(iii)
motivation in undertaking a research degree, but how to maintain it and
where to get
support
(iv)
identifying your field of interest and different types of research,
including practice-based
(v) defining title, aims and
method for a proposal, and support
material:
(vi) planing
work schedules, monitoring progress, MPhil/PhD transfer, and
examination
