The Faculty of Art and Design at the University of Hertfordshire is seeking
a full-time PhD student for a fully-funded studentship. The studentship
will provide fees and a stipend of approximately 7650 GBP per year for
three years (based on 1999/2000 figures).

The project will centre on the interpretation of graphical notation
systems. The view of what might constitute such a system is broad,
including the notation of music and dance, diagrammatic illustrations of
mechanical and physical systems, flow diagrams and other forms of
representation that influence how we understand abstract ideas. These
systems might have a number of different objectives, such as the repetition
of content in a performance, the analysis of syntax, the design and
evaluation of structures, etc. They may be designed or used by artists and
designers, musicians, computer scientists, etc. The researcher will compare
the use of these graphical notational systems with other notation in the
context in which they occur. The aims will be, first to contribute to our
understanding of how these graphical systems function, and, second to
assess the contribution they make in terms of content and potential in
comparison with the content and potential for communication made by text or
other non-graphical means.

Summary: "what do graphical notations do that text or other media do not?",
and by responding to this question to generate guidance on when these
devices would contribute to the effectiveness of communication.

Applicants should make informal contact with the provisional supervisors in
the first instance:
Dr Michael Biggs and Carol Britton.
