A Professional Development Workshop at the Academy of Management Annual Meeting Sunday, August 6, 2000 (8 a.m. - 12 noon) Royal York Hotel, Quebec Room Toronto, Canada Organizers Nirmal Sethia, College of Business, California State Polytechnic University, Pomona Arvind Bhambri, Marshall School of Business, University of Southern California Workshop Goals Design in the context of the proposed workshop refers to the modes of thought and professional practices anchored in and evolving around the discipline of Industrial Design. While in universities design is traditionally affiliated with programs in the Arts, the practice of design at the cutting edge of the profession is becoming highly interdisciplinary and holistic. Design teams increasingly engage industrial designers, engineers and social scientists in collaborative and creative problem-solving. In the new vision of design, the focus is not on product-centered innovations but on user-centered innovation-innovation informed by insights into product-user relationship, and aimed at enriching totality of user experience with a product. In this workshop we will attempt to develop a better understanding of how innovative and entrepreneurial organizations do design-a question approachable at individual, group and organizational levels of analysis, and also a better understanding of what these organizations aim to achieve by design-a question posed at the strategic level. The learning from this workshop will be valuable for furthering research and teaching goals as well as for improving practice.
