Jivan's area of interest is a good example of how rhetoric may be used
to probe design.  Clothing, fashion, and accessories are some of the
most readily accessible products for study through a "rhetoric of
things."  These products stress "ethos" or personal identity, and serve
to unite and separate groups.  There is, of course, much literature
emerging in this area.  A recent book from the University of Chicago
Press (name and author elude me at the moment) presses this point quite
well.
