BOOK REVIEW

A GLANCE BACK AT BREAM No 3 in the Glance back Series by Ruth Proctor
Hirst 1999 40 pp numerous photos. SB £4.50 + post from Black Dwarf
Publications, 47-49 High Street, Lydney, Glos GL15 5DD

Bream is the largest village in the forest of Dean and one of the
largest in England. Bream can trace its history back over 700 years,
whilst the nearby ancient mining site known as The Devil’s Chapel was
created in Roman times. Most of this book is taken up with tales of
village life, illustrated by numerous photos, many of which I had not
seen before. Six pages of text and photos are devoted to coal mining.
In its heyday in the 1920’s Flour Mill Colliery, or Park Gutter,
employed nearly 1200 men, only to finally close in 1962.

Other books in the series in preparation, which also cover mining areas
- Lydbrook, Coleford, and Mitcheldean - are eagerly awaited.
