Water power would certainly be a very good topic for a future NAMHO
conference. It has played a very major part in mining for hundreds of years
if not thousands.

One outstanding example of a waterwheel at a mine is the Laxey Wheel in the
Isle of Man. The leat system leading to this is shown in the video Manx
Mines and Minerals, obtainable from Duke Video.

Of course as well as the obvious uses of water for operating pumps and for
winding, huge workshops such as that at Llanberis used water power for all
their machine tools.

There are lots of books with chapters about the use of water in mining,
including in Collieries of Wales (see my other message of today for
details).

Yes definitely a conference not to miss; if there are field trips
underground, may I suggest that all those going should get soaked on each
trip!
