I have also come across references to the list of steam engines built prior to 1800; I think it is cited in either Flynn or Church's volumes in the History of the British Coal Industry series. I assume it remains unpublished; if the authors could be persuaded to publish it either on paper or even better, on a web site, I am sure it would be a very valuable resource.
