The idea that there are (or were) workable deposits of native calcium carbide
seems almost ludicrous. As a chemist of twenty years experience I've certainly
never heard of such a thing. How could the workings be kept dry? My own guess is
that the article referred to graphite (carbon) mines rather than carbide. Either
that or the whole thing was some sort of joke.
