Restoration of the Levant Beam Winding Engine...Stories and Slides

Milton Thomas, the man who spearheaded a group of volunteers in the
restoration of the Levant Beam Winding Engine will speak about the
rewards of the project Wednesday June 7 at Cape Cornwall School, St.
Just. In an evening sponsored by the St. Just Mines Research Group. The
presentation, to feature a slide show and more than a few good stories,
will begin at 7:30pm with doors opening at 7:00pm. Local artist Clove
Carter has donated an original painting of Levant to be raffled as part
of the evening's program. For more information call (01736) 787312.

The restoration of the steam engine at Levant was begun in 1984, took 8
years, up to 14 volunteers at a time, and a host of donations from
around the world. It's a project Mr. Thomas has been especially pleased
to be associated with. "The number of visitors who come to Levant to
enjoy the engine in steam has been a huge reward. But it's the school
children who see it working in the year 2000 just as it was over 160
years ago, that's the most rewarding. I know that the children of today
have an opportunity to know the history of this area and the people who
lived, worked and died here. That's the most rewarding aspect of the
project because it's the most long-lasting."

Mr. Thomas' speech is part of a series of special presentations to build
interest in an upcoming exhibition entitled Submarine Mines of the St.
Just District, to be held at The Count House, Botallack July 10 through
August 5. More information about the exhibition may be obtained
