Sharing Museum Skills Millennium Award Placement Opportunity Introduction The museum development team at Kent County Council was awarded an HLF Millennium Award to produce an interactive history of the County on cd-rom. The cd will tell the history of the county through museum objects, documents and historic sites. The key audience is KS3 and the family group. It will be distributed to schools and libraries across the county, and will be on sale in participating museums. We would like to offer a placement on this project to someone interested in being involved in a multimedia project. Possible areas of work We would be happy to arrange the exact details of a placement to suit the particular secondee, but in general terms the areas of activity are as follows: * Research on museums, collections, sites and historic buildings in the county * Research on history of the county * Editing of existing research findings into suitable text - similar to writing exhibition panels * Participating in planning process to set the final structure of the cd * Finding and selecting appropriate objects, documents, film and sound recordings for inclusion * Photographing objects and buildings for inclusion * Digitising assets originating in different media * Participating in meetings with the production company to plan the programming and production of the cd Skills required This placement might suit a curator, interpreter, or museum educator with experience of producing exhibitions, activities or publications who would like to gain experience of multimedia projects. The exact skills needed would depend on when the placement took place, and on whether the placement focussed on one activity, such as research or digital photography, or was a general one covering the range of activities. Practical details The project is already well developed, and is due to be completed by September this year. In order to meet this deadline, the main activity for our office will be data creation, collation and digitising during the period of March to June. The secondee would be based in the office of the Cultural Development Unit in Maidstone, Kent, but would have the opportunity to travel and meet museum staff and volunteers across the county.
