Medical and Bio-Science Information on the Internet:
Using the Web as a Medical Research Library

09:30 - 16:30 Tuesday 21st March 2000 Nottingham University

Information, networked world-wide, using the Internet offers medical
research and information-seeking possibilities previously unimaginable.
The quantity of information available, 24 hours a day, to the desktop
provides a huge addition to the traditional medical research library.
The Internet is becoming increasingly important in the modern research
environment, particularly with the use of multimedia formats and the
production of electronic journals. However, the ease of publication on
the internet can bring problems such as a reduction in quality and
information overload.

Many Internet information services are at first glance easy to use,
however, many users soon find them frustrating and ineffective. This
workshop aims to provide you with the skills you need to use this
wealth medical of information efficiently and reliably. It will feature
the OMNI service, which provides a gateway to high quality biomedical
Internet resources. The workshop will also look at current and future
developments in the use of information services and searching tools. It
is suitable for medical and bio-science researchers and academics,
librarians and computing service staff.

Workshop Content:
The workshop will comprise presentations, demonstrations and
hands-on sessions with opportunities for questions and discussion.
Participants will each receive a workbook which contains workshop
exercises, presentation slides and other relevant materials.

Topics covered will include:
 * internet versus more traditional information resources
 * efficient searching methods and strategies
 * a comparison of search engines
 * effective use of your browser for finding biomedical resources
 * advanced searching techniques
 * the scope of medical information on the Internet
 * searching for quality medical resources on the web
 * evaluating the quality of biomedical resources
 * electronic journals
 * future developments

By the end of the workshop participants will have:
 * investigated different types of web-based medical information
   service
 * examined advanced techniques used in information seeking
 * used Boolean operators to perform web searches
 * developed searching strategies
 * investigated quality issues related to web-based medical information
   such as accuracy and currency

Workshop Requirements:
Participants need no special technical skills and no previous knowledge
of the Internet; however basic computer skills such as using a mouse
and keyboard are essential, and experience of using Microsoft Windows
to open and save files and open and close applications e.g. a word
processor, would be helpful.

The cost of the workshop is £ 105 for participants from higher and
further education. Other participants should contact Netskills for the
relevant fees.
Note: Costs include lunch, morning coffee and afternoon tea.
