Netskills Workshop: Authoring on the World Wide Web 09:30 - 16:30 Tuesday 4th July 2000 University of Newcastle The World Wide Web (WWW) is becoming increasingly pervasive in society, covering all aspects of everyday life including commerce, leisure and education. One of the key features of the WWW is the ease with which individuals can publish information, and the simplicity with which sophisticated and exciting results can be achieved in a short space of time. This is a practical workshop for users of the World Wide Web and wish to start creating their own Web pages. Whether you are providing data for business, education or pleasure, this workshop will give you the knowledge you need to make your information available on the World Wide Web. Workshop Content: The workshop will comprise presentations, demonstrations and hands-on sessions with opportunities for questions and discussion. Participants will each receive a workbook which contains workshop exercises, presentation slides and other relevant materials. Topics covered will include: * A comprehensive beginner's guide to web authoring * Creation of World Wide Web pages * Publishing documents on a web server * Use of web authoring packages * Converting word processor documents for use on the web * Validation of web documents * Web page design and accessibility issues By the end of the workshop participants will have: * written simple web pages using HTML tags * included graphics in their web pages * practised using hypertext to link to other pages * converted MS Word documents into HTML * published web pages on the Netskills web server * included colours and background images in their web pages * created web pages using tables and frames * had an opportunity to investigate and discuss web design and accessibility issues Workshop Requirements: Participants need no special technical skills; however basic computer skills such as using a mouse and keyboard are essential, and experience of using Microsoft Windows to open, save and close files and applications would be useful. Participants are expected to have seen the World Wide Web and used a Web browser such as Netscape or Internet Explorer. The cost of the workshop is £ 105 for participants from higher and further education. Other participants should contact Netskills for the relevant fees.
