A Post Doc here at U. Maine Geology is participating in a project
that involves study of sediments cored from the Kerguelen Plateau, Indian
Ocean. Some of the sediments contain detrital garnet grains. EMPA show that
these grains apparently have very little compositional zoning and pyrope
contents as high as 38 mole %. For purposes of refining plate tectonic
models involving the opening of the Indian Ocean, it would be very useful
to get some idea of whether the detrital garnet was derived from the Indian
or the Antarctic shield.
It would be much appreciated if some of you could provide references on
the igneous and metamorphic rocks in India and/or Antarctica which might
bear on assessing from which (based on garnet chemistry) of the two
continents the detrital garnets may have been derived. Alternatively, are
rocks having such garnet chemistry common on both shields?
Considerable searching of the literature has already been
conducted, but particular difficulty has been encountered in finding
references on the Singhbhum terrane. Hence, references to petrologic
studies on that terrane would be especially appreciated.
Many thanks for any information or literature references that can be
provided.
                     Sincerely yours,
                     Chuck Guidotti
