Hosted by: Prof. Kecheng Liu, Semiotics Special Interest Group (http://www.soc.staffs.ac.uk/~cmtkl/ssig.html) Abstract Designing for e-commerce is significantly different to designing any other information system. Specifically, designing the user interface is more complex than can be achieved with traditional stakeholder methods of HCI. In fact, rather than designing a user interface it is becoming necessary to build a user experience. Very little is known about the audience of an e-commerce site, al least on first visit, and ways have to be found of not only attracting customers but also keeping them. In this respect e-commerce design is much more akin to mass media production than software development. The key to success lies in understanding the ways in which meanings can be generated and mediated as well as ways in which trust can be engendered. The semiotic lens provides a language and toolkit that applies exceedingly well to this new media, which is after all a highly complex sign system, and it is hoped that a semiotic viewpoint will provide insight into whole-experience design approaches that will lead to successful e-commerce sites. This seminar will outline a theoretical perspective which aims to provide a useful lens through which to view the semiotic e-commerce experience, apply that lens to some existent e-commerce sites and then attempt to distil design principles which will help in the creation of rich and successful e-commerce experiences. No charge for the seminar. But if you intend to attend, you are encouraged to register your interest with Liz Bennion at <[log in to unmask]>.
