Education Research in the Caribbean (Deadline 10th March) (Published in September 2000 by the University of the West Indies) Details at: http://www.uwimona.edu.jm/~erc The Caribbean is a vibrant region of fast moving change. Nowhere is the change more rapid and significant throughout the region than in education. The Editor invites scholarly papers from inside and from outside the region illustrating how education research is increasing our knowledge, enriching our cultural life, energizing our economy, increasing the pool of qualified personnel in critical fields, sustaining civic participation in democracy, and raising educational expectations throughout the region. The editor welcomes scholarly papers that offer original, thought-provoking, and imaginative explorations of current thinking and research on: - Major education issues of current Caribbean concern, - Curriculum theory and practice, - Pre and post secondary education, - Social system issues (nutrition, school violence, access to education, etc.) - Effective use of educational technology, - Innovation in the teaching and assessment of traditional subject areas, - Education administration, - Teacher education and the practicum. The ERC wishes to encourage a wide range of voices, perspectives, positions, and approaches that enlarge our understanding of the contributions made by educational research to the Caribbean. Papers of quality from inexperienced as well as experienced researchers and practitioners are earnestly solicited. The research may represent thought pieces, empirical studies, point-counter-point papers, conceptual analysis, or illustrative case studies. Guidelines for contributors 1. Content: The editor seeks papers that are of interest to teacher educators, graduate students in education, practicing teachers, policy makers and education researchers with interests in the Caribbean. Articles may represent perspectives from, or for, one or all five groups. It is particularly important that research is discussed in terms of its implications for practice in the region. 2. Length and Format: Contributed papers are limited to 4,500 words with an additional abstract of not more than 150 words. The format of text, tables and figures conforms to one of the following styles APA (4th edition), MLA or Chicago. To facilitate publishing, end notes should be used instead of footnotes. The manuscript is accompanied by a brief bio-pic of the author(s) of up to 100 words each. 3. Editorial Process: Papers will be initially checked by the editor. Those that meet the basic requirements will be sent out for blind review by two reviewers who have interests in the areas concerned. Reviewed papers may be returned to the author for revision, along with the reviewers' suggestions and recommendations. Papers recommended for acceptance by the reviewers will be published only after final approval of the Editorial Board. 4. Evaluation Criteria: Priority will be assigned to papers that demonstrate new ideas or methods, or indicate a high level of knowledge and unique treatment of the topic. - relevance to education research in the Caribbean - interest to one or more of the five reader groups - clarity - timeliness - creativity - adaptability of ideas to a variety of educational settings Caribbean 5. Submission dates for Contributions: Manuscripts are welcome at any time up to the closing date for submissions of Friday 10th March 2000. Reviewers notes will be emailed to contributors by 7th April. Requested amendments, if any, are to be returned by 21st April for resubmission to reviewers and acceptance by the editorial board on 12th May. Publication date is 1st September 2000. The preferred method of submitting a paper is via e-mail.
