Teaching and learning with international students in an art and design context
15th November 200
led by Jude Carroll and Celia Bishop
******************************************************************************************
International students bring a whole new dimension to a course or programme.
Perhaps they offer unfamiliar assumptions, learning styles or communication
strategies.  Many have experiences and knowledge that enrich British
students' learning.  International students are often keen to learn, willing
to persevere and committed to being successful in British HE.  Yet many
teachers see both this positive side and the challenges, too - to provide
the guidance, support and encouragement they need;  to design courses that
value and include their ideas;  to ensure that all the students benefit from
learning in a more diverse group.

This course will not provide easy answers but it will give you a chance to
explore what the research has to offer, to share what you now do with
colleagues and to evaluate some good practice recommendations.
Participants: anyone who teaches international students as part of mainstream course
outcomes

By the end of the course, participants should be able to:

*identify the general impact of cross-cultural assumptions and expectations
on learning
*evaluate their current practice in terms of its possible effect on
international students
*review practical suggestions for operating effectively as a teacher of
international students;  topics covered are likely to include lecturing,
groups, assessment, and developing academic skills
*share practice with colleagues
*compare their own practice with recommendations from research findings and
the literature of teaching international students
About the leaders
Jude Carroll has taught in secondary school, in FE and in HE on three
continents and now works as a Staff Developer at Oxford Brookes University.
Along with several colleagues, she is responsible for both staff and
educational development at Brookes.  Her long-standing interest in
cross-cultural issues  arose first  from personal experience then was
strengthened by her former role as Head of Equal Opportunities at Oxford
Brookes, and subsequently  developed through tutoring on the course for newly
appointed lecturing staff.  She has run workshops on cross-cultural
communication and teaching  topic across Britain and in Africa.  In June,
2000, her Centre published  A Guide to Teaching International Students.

Celia Bishop has worked with international students as an English language
teacher and trainer since the early seventies in FE, HE and Adult Education
and is now the Study Support Co-ordinator at the London College of
