The London Institute has been awarded a grant from the Research Support
Libraries Programme, to lead the project Support for nationwide research
activities in the fields of book history and book design.  This is a joint
project involving partner institutions of Reading University, Manchester
Metropolitan University, Napier University, St Bride Printing Library and
the University of London [Senate House].

Applications are invited for the following project posts:


Project Technical Officer - London Institute		
Fixed term contract of one year

Salary:	20,608 - 23,187 inclusive of London Weighting 

Based at the Elephant and Castle site of the London College of Printing

This is an exciting opportunity to gain experience in digital library
development, which would suit a technically skilled and enthusiastic
person.  The postholder will create, develop and maintain the digital
requirements of this RSLP project, which are to produce a web based user
interface leading to a virtual database of identified records and images
from book history and book design collections at the partner institutions
and to ensure that access to growing collections can be sustained through
the virtual database. The postholder will be required to liaise with named
contacts at the partner institutions and to communicate with collaborators
and other interested parties as required.

The successful candidate will have an understanding of Z39.50 software,
will be skilled and experienced in web technology, accompanied with a
willingness to develop their practical knowledge in these areas, for the
successful delivery of the project.  Experience of using these skills in a
library environment would be welcome.

Applications are encouraged from graduates or equivalent, with two years
relevant experience, analytical skills and a high level of personal
computer literacy.  

This post may prove suitable as a one year secondment for the successful
candidate.

Project Cataloguer - London Institute		
Fixed term contract of 12 weeks

Salary:	10.15 per hour, inclusive of LW.   Based on 35 hours per week for
12 weeks, with the option of a minimum of 17.5 hours per week for 24 weeks

Based at the London College of Printing and Chelsea College of Art and
Design

An opportunity exists to create retrospective catalogue records, using the
Talis automated library system, for items held in the Talwin Morris,
Catherine Arthur and Decorated books from the Netherlands collections, in
the library at the London College of Printing, and the Artists books
collection, in the library at Chelsea College of Art and Design.  These
records will form part of a virtual database of 125,000 identified records
from the partner institutions in the project to support nationwide
research activities in book history and book design, including 16,000
records which have not previously been delivered on-line, or to the
required standard.

The successful candidate will have experience of MARC, AACR2 and online
cataloguing.  Experience of using Talis would be helpful.  An interest in
book design, experience of working with special collections and the
ability to recognise and describe the physical features of the book as an
object, in a catalogue record, would also be helpful.

Project Cataloguers  Manchester Metropolitan University 
Fixed term contract of 26 weeks (35 hours per week) or 52 weeks (17.5
hours per week).

Based at Manchester Metropolitan University

Salary: Scale 4/5 13,179 - 16,600 pro-rata 

The postholder will upgrade and/or create catalogue records for items in
the Book Design and other relevant collections at the Manchester
Metropolitan University. The records created will form part of a virtual
database of 125,000 identified records from the partner institutions in
the project to support nationwide research activities in book history and
book design.

The successful candidate will be a chartered librarian and will have
experience of cataloguing to AACR2 and UKMARC format. Expertise in Talis,
experience of working with special collections and an interest in book
design/ book history are all desirable. The ability to recognise and
describe the physical features of the book as an object, in a catalogue
record, is essential.
