Apologies for cross posting. CALL FOR PAPERS AID00 Machine Learning in Design (MLinD) Workshop: Saturday/Sunday, 24/25 June 2000 http://www.cad.strath.ac.uk/~alex/AID/AID00/MLinD00.html Purpose of the workshop The purpose of the workshop is to explore the issues and requirements of machine learning in design, to critically evaluate the current and required support from machine learning techniques, and to identify the key areas and challenges in the future. The objective is to evolve a core understanding of the issues and main topics for future research and to stimulate synergy in the Machine Learning in Design research community. To achieve this future issues, challenges and applications will be discussed and key areas for future activities highlighted. Workshop Format and Topics The workshop will run for half a day prior to the main AI in Design conference. Its format will depend upon submitted position papers but is likely to consist of a number of small working groups tackling identified issues and presenting their deliberations to the workshop participants for discussion. For example, a brainstorming session may take place where future issues, challenges and applications will be generated and then grouped into main areas of activity. Small working groups could then attempt to define relations between the generated results and present their findings. Alterntively, key issues may be identified, from the papers submitted and openly discussed. The outcomes from the workshop will be documented and made available through the WWW. Papers are particularly invited that address: * Latest developments in ML and their application in design * Future challenges and directions of ML in Design research * The strengths and weaknesses of current work in the area * Why does design present distinct challenges to ML research? Guidelines for Position Papers Position papers (in pdf fromat) of no more than 6 pages should be submitted by email to [log in to unmask] (Alex Duffy) no later than the 15th May 2000. Submission of a position paper will be considerd as approval for publication on the WWW and workshop proceedings. All accepted position papers will be distributed to the participants. Special Issue Previous workshops have often resulted in special issues being developed in the journal Artificial Intelligence in Engineering Design, Analysis and Manufacture (AI EDAM). _____________________________________________________________________ Dr A H B Duffy Tel: +44 141 548 3134 CAD Centre Fax: +44 141 552 3148 University of Strathclyde E-mail: [log in to unmask] 75 Montrose Street URL: http://www.cad.strath.ac.uk Glasgow G1 1XJ, UK. _____________________________________________________________________ %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
