Berg's Sonata op. 1 --listened to just now,
and even in the 12 tone --post tonal compositions, Berg follows conventions
regarding the sonata and his lyrics. I do not see how you can make the
comparison with the poem in question, which was 1) not created with music in
mind 2) has an awkward syntax that would make it difficult to sing.
There was a guy in Limerick once who
advertised in Melody Maker who could set anything to music -- I wrote a song
that was entitled "me and my chocolate bar" -- and it was dreadful --
because I wanted to test the guy's skills. Lo and behold one month later
he set it to music --and my twin brother played it and sang it. I don't think I
have laughed so much in my life --a fiver well spent.
Maybe if he is still working he could set the
poem to music.
