Doug's death is a sad blow for us all, the loss of a reasoned and
compassionate voice, and a tireless arguer for all our poetries, as
well as his own. I'd been reading his "Salvo for Africa" at my dad's
place, where I've been for the weekend (and thus beyond e-mail) at
roughly the time he died, and thinking: this is the committment we
want, the articulate voice raised both humanely and engagedly.

I'd come to know him through various editorial collaborations and
projects, and valued his openness and friendliness, as I did, of
course, his responsible and measured posts to this list. A friend
missed, indeed. It's a very mortal time. My sympathies to those close
to him.
