I just don't think we're in a position to sneer at common-sense. I don't think we have the standing in the world, the demonstrated good-will in a public discourse, to cast aside even such a vague and almost-empty gesture towards faith in the human generality. I don't think any edifice we have constructed has proved solid enough to give us such a right, or that any alternative to common-sense we have offered has been anything but crackpot ravings to most people's ears. When we find out how to address people out there, we can dismiss their instinctual wisdoms as common muck.
