Parliamentary Archives
Assistant Archivists (Four Posts)

Salary in the range £15,213 - £21,472

The Parliamentary Archives, also known as the House of Lords Record Office,
is seeking to recruit four assistant archivists to form a retrospective
conversion project team. The Archives aims to have created a
fully-functioning online catalogue for use over the web by 2005, containing
data conforming to national and international standards on archival
description. The jobs will, therefore be on a fixed-term basis running from
April 2001 until March 2005 or until the job is completed, whichever is the
sooner, with the possibility of permanent employment for one or more of the
incumbents at the end of the fixed term. Recently-qualified archivists are
welcome to apply.

The work will involve a wide range of cataloguing and editing activities. As
we will be creating a hierarchical, fully-referenced catalogue of our
holdings for the first time ever, the work will also include a certain
amount of relabelling, reboxing and reviewing of records as you convert
their finding aids.

You must have a recognised post-graduate archive qualification; some
experience of archival cataloguing; a sound understanding of ISAD(G) and the
NCA rules; confidence using Windows-based software and Microsoft Word; good
keyboard skills; excellent team-working skills; and experience of delivering
results on time, under pressure.

On site facilities are excellent and include several restaurants and a
health and fitness centre. The Archives provides support for those enrolled,
or wishing to enrol, on the Society of Archivists Registration Scheme.

Further details and an application form can be obtained from the
Establishment Office, House of Lords, London, SW1A 0PW telephone 020 7219
6630 (answering machine). The closing date for requests for an application
form is 12 January 2001 but please note that we will be unable to send out
forms between 23 December 2000 and 2 January 2001. Completed forms should
be returned by first post on Friday 19 January 2001. Interviews will be
held at the end of January 2001.

The House of Lords is an equal opportunities employer.
