DAVID BARRIE APPOINTED TO THE BOARD OF RESOURCE: THE COUNCIL FOR MUSEUMS,
ARCHIVES AND LIBRARIES


David Barrie, Director of the National Art Collections Fund, has been
appointed to the Board of Resource: The Council for Museums, Archives and
Libraries, Culture Secretary Chris Smith announced today. The appointment is
for a term of four years and brings the Board membership to sixteen
including the Chairman, Lord Evans of Temple Guiting.

Announcing the appointment, Culture Secretary Chris Smith said:

"David Barrie's enthusiasm for the visual and performing arts and his
ability to co-ordinate cultural activity on a large scale will make him a
key player on the Resource Board"

Resource's Chairman Lord Evans commented:

"We are delighted to welcome David Barrie to the board and we look forward
to making the most of his considerable and wide-ranging expertise "

Biographical note David Barrie is Director of the National Art Collections
Fund (The Art Fund). He served in the Diplomatic Service from 1975 to 1987
and was seconded from the Cabinet Office in 1989 to be Executive Director of
the Japan Festival 1991, a nation-wide celebration of Japanese culture.

David Barrie is a Director of The Guild of St George (a charity founded by
Ruskin) and a trustee of the Ruskin Foundation. He is also chairman of
Ruskin To-Day, a body set up to co-ordinate events marking the centenary of
Ruskin's death. His abridgement of Ruskin's Modern Painters was published in
1987 with a revised edition in 2000.

David Barrie has not undertaken any political activity in the last five
years.


Notes for Editors

1. Resource: The Council for Museums, Archives and Libraries is the new name
for the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLAC), the strategic body
which replaced the Museums and Galleries Commission (MGC) and the Library
and Information Commission (LIC) on 3 April this year.

2. David Barrie joins Resource Board members Ajay Chowdhury, Dr Maurna
Crozier, Lord Evans, Victor Gray, Vivien Griffiths, Loyd Grossman, Nicholas
Hodgson, Mark Jones, Karen Knight, Neil MacGregor, Elizabeth Jane Ryder,
Michael Stevenson, Alan Watkin, Mark Wood and Professor Lola Young.

3. Resource will have a maximum Board membership of 17, although the number
may vary as circumstances require.

4. Appointments to Resource are made by the Secretary of State for Culture,
Media and Sport.

5. The Art Fund is the UK's biggest art charity with 130,000 members. In
1999 it gave grants worth a total of £4.2 million to museums and galleries
across the country.
