A2A Update, December 2000

Preparation for A2A catalogue retroconversion projects continues; five A2A
consortia have now submitted applications to the Heritage Lottery Fund, and
all funding bids will be completed by the end of this month.

The Eastern Region is preparing a funding application for a project on
Landscape and Archives, aiming to convert to electronic form around 19,600
catalogue pages for archives illuminating the development of the urban and
rural landscapes of Eastern England - a region stretching from the outskirts
of London to the Wash. The archives represented include maps, photographs
and sale catalogues; the archives of architects, builders and estate agents,
of local authorities and great estates; transport archives; and the records
of enclosure and drainage. The project thus meshes with other A2A
initiatives, such as From Landlord to Labourer in the South East Region and
the user-led TRAP project for railway archives.

In the North East Region the A2A focus is on industrial heritage. Under the
Picks and Pistons project, Teesside Archives, Tyne and Wear Archives Service
and Northumberland Record Office intend to convert about 12,500 pages of
catalogues of archives of engineering, iron and steel manufacture,
shipbuilding and mining concerns; of railway and utility records; and of a
variety of commercial and business archives ranging from retailers to boot
and shoe manufacturers. The consortium's funding bid also covers hardware
and the installation of internet connections in each participating office,
so that all the A2A finding aids will be easily accessible in the North
East.

A2A is a step towards a virtual national archives catalogue for England and
will make available 8 million catalogue entries for archives dating from the
twelfth to the twentieth centuries and held in national, local and
specialist archives repositories on the www by March 2002. For more details
