I have now received the sketches form Mr Tandy, with some dates.The Minster and the Library were "restored" in 1850/60 and he thinks the books were probably re-chained then. There may. of course, have been no option if the chains were missing and they were to remain chained. The available knotted chains may have been the best replacement at the time. My local Parish Hall cannot keep the chains on the basin plugs for a few months let alone 60 years! The sketches are at hist-met.org/chain.html. I have put the query on our web site and will put it in our Newsletter for our members not on the List to answer if they can.
