IMPERIAL COLLEGE OF SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY AND MEDICINE
NATIONAL HEART & LUNG INSTITUTE

JOB DESCRIPTION

POST: Medical Statistician

DEPARTMENT: Occupational and
Environmental Medicine

HEAD OF DEPARTMENT: Professor AJ Newman Taylor

LOCATION: Emmanuel Kaye Building,
Manresa Road,
						London SW3

THE NATIONAL HEART AND LUNG INSTITUTE

The National Heart and Lung Institute, with its associated hospital, Royal
Brompton Hospital, is the UK's national centre for research and postgraduate
teaching in heart and lung disease. The Institute was recently awarded a
5-star for research in the RAE rating. The department of Occupational and
Environmental Medicine carries out research, teaching and specialist
clinical investigation on lung disease caused by occupational and
environmental factors, and has a particular interest in asthma. A wide range
of epidemiological and laboratory-based projects is underway.

This post offers the opportunity to join a small but diverse team within an
active clinical and research department. The group includes
epidemiologists, medical statisticians, research nurses and a research
co-ordinator involved in a variety of projects.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1.	Statistical Contribution to Departmental Projects

The post holder will be the principal statistician for a number of research
projects. These currently include:

i)	Occupational surveys

One of the roles of the Department of Occupational and
Environmental Medicine is as an independent assessor of prevalence and
causes of occupational asthma within a number of occupational settings.
Within a focused time frame, a cross-sectional survey of the workforce is
undertaken, including measuring each employee's allergies and recording
reported symptoms. The post-holder would be responsible for all statistical
analyses, along with dissemination of results leading to joint authorship in
publications of findings. Opportunities for assisting with fieldwork will
also be available.

ii)	Gene-environment interactions in laboratory animal allergy

This project involves the study of epidemiological aspects
of laboratory animal allergy with a particular interest in the relationship
of inherited host characteristics and allergen exposure. Fieldwork, in
relevant occupational settings, is currently being undertaken as part of a
case-control study. The post-holder would be solely responsible for
statistical advice, support and direction to the principle investigators in
this study.

iii)	Asthma Multi-centre Infant Cohort Studies (AMICS)

Since 1993, the department has run a large, prospective
birth cohort of childhood asthma and allergy. Four other European centres
(Barcelona, Menorca, Munich and Kuopio in Finland) have since assembled
similar cohorts using common protocols and there are currently many
opportunities for undertaking pooled analyses of these five cohorts.

Within each of these projects, the post holder's main responsibility will be
data management and analysis, but they will also be able to contribute on
many other levels, from design issues to the dissemination of results
leading to joint authorship in publications of findings.

2.	Other

The statistician will also be offered the opportunity to be involved in the
following:

i)	Statistical teaching on courses organised within the Institute and
Royal Brompton Hospital.

ii)	Some statistical consultancy and advice within the Institute.
