Appointment of a Lecturer in Statistics in the Department of Mathematics,
Statistics and Operational Research
2000


We are seeking to appoint a new lecturer to start work on 1st September
2000.  The position will have a starting salary on the scale £14,904 to
£30,636 depending on age and experience.  The closing date for applications
is 31st March 2000.  Further details about the post are given below.

1.	The Department

	The Department is one of three in the Faculty of Science and
Mathematics.  It comprises 29 full time academic staff, 7 support staff and
8 research assistants.  Most of the staff are housed on the main campus
within the city of Nottingham, while the remainder have offices at our green
site campus at Clifton, approximately 4 miles south west of the city.

	The Department runs two undergraduate degrees: BSc (Hons)
Mathematics which is based at the City site and BSc (Hons) in Combined
Studies in Science which is taught at Clifton. The BSc Mathematics programme
offers final year students a choice whereby they can specialise in
mathematics or statistics.  The University's Foundation Degree in Applied
Science is also based within the Department.  A new joint honours programme
in Mathematics and Engineering is currently under development.

	The Department's computing facilities are based around 9 Sun
computers and 8 X-terminals.  All research staff have workstations or
X-terminals on their desks and some final year undergraduate teaching is
carried out using the Sun network.

2.	The New Post

	As a result of recent retirements together with the impetus to
expand research we are currently planning on making a new appointment.  The
current position provides an excellent opportunity to develop a broad
teaching portfolio while pursuing research and/or consultancy activities.
The post will be based at the City site and will involve the teaching of
Statistics on both honours degree and service courses.  Candidates
interested in teaching some Operational Research will be strongly welcomed.
We encourage applications from candidates who can contribute new research
areas to the Department as well as those who are active in the topics listed
below.

3.	Research in The Department

	Research in the Department is carried out within three broad groups:
Probability, Statistics and Applied Mathematics.  The main personnel
involved with their areas of activity are as follows:

	Statistics

	Dr J Marriott - Bayesian statistics, time series and prediction.

	Professor N Davies - time series, computer aided learning,
statistical modelling.

	Professor V Barnett - environmental statistics, environmental
standards.

	Dr M Baxter (Reader) - statistical archaeology, multivariate
methods, applied statistics.

	Dr H Nikolov - operational research, biostatistics.

	Dr C McCollin - reliability theory.

	Dr D Crabb - medical statistics, vision science

	Dr Baxter participates in a European research group which received a
major EC research grant in 1998 for "Statistical modelling of archaeological
ceramic provenance" which is currently funding a postdoctoral fellow, Dr I
Papageorgiou.

	Professor Davies is the director of the Royal Statistical Society
Centre for Statistical Education.  Professor Davies is also director of the
Nottingham Industrial and Applied Business Statistics Unit (NIABS) which is
based within the Department.  The unit employs a full time research
associate at the Data Base (Nottingham) Ltd and a full time consultant
contracted to the Medical Defence Union.  We anticipate that these centres
will create many exciting opportunities for new collaborative projects.



	Probability

	Professor D Applebaum - stochastic analysis, Lévy processes,
stochastic differential geometry, quantum stochastic calculus.

	Dr V Kolokoltsov (Reader) - stochastic analysis, quantum mechanics,
idempotent analysis, optimisation, games, financial mathematics.

	Professor R L Hudson - quantum stochastic calculus, quantum
stochastic calculus, quantum probability, quantum logics, functional
analysis.

	Dr R Schilling - Markov processes, Lévy processes,
pseudo-differential operators.

	Dr Z Coelho - Ergodic theory, random dynamical systems.

	The Probability group organised a major international conference
"Probability - theory and applications" which was held at NTU in April 1998
and was funded by both EPSRC and the LMS.  Members of the group are involved
in organising a satellite conference on "Noncommutative Geometry and
Probability" to be held in Nottingham in summer 2000 as part of the IAMP
Congress and a workshop on "Lévy Processes" to take place in Spring 2001.

	Applied Mathematics

	Dr A Sackfield (Reader) - elasticity, rheology, tribology,
industrial mathematics, bearing design.

	Dr J Bland - discrete optimisation, numerical methods.

Dr C Beardah - numerical analysis, differential algebraic equations, kernel
density     methods.

	Dr J Baylis - coding theory, discrete optimisation.

	Dr B Jumarhon - numerical analysis, numerical solution of PDEs,
mathematical modelling.

	Dr J Webb - game theory, ecological modelling, quantum fields.

	Dr A Mandache -  algebraic coding theory

	Dr J Gough - quantum noise, quantum dynamical systems.

In the 1996 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), two groups were submitted,
Applied Mathematics which improved from a grade 2 to a 3b and Statistics
which obtained a 3 in 1992, also obtained a 3b.  No other "new" University
obtained two 3b's in mathematical areas.  The department is committed to the
pursuit of excellence in research as well as teaching and both groups are
expecting to improve their gradings in subsequent RAE's.

The Department's teaching was inspected by the Quality Assurance Agency at
the end of May 1999 within the context of the national External Subject
Review (ESR).  The Department was awarded 21/24, comparing well with similar
institutions.  In a recent national league table published by the Guardian,
the Department was ranked equal third on its degree level provision in
Mathematics.

Although we are not necessarily seeking applicants with extensive teaching
experience, we expect that the successful candidate will have strong
potential to be an excellent teacher and will be enthusiastic about teaching
at all levels within the University including on service courses.
