GLAXO WELLCOME

SCHOLARSHIPS TO STUDY FOR AN M Sc IN STATISTICS

Glaxo Wellcome is a World Leader in the discovery of prescription medicines. Our wide portfolio of medicines stems from an ongoing commitment to research which sees more than £1.2 billion spent each year. Drug discovery is driven by data and information. Statisticians are responsible for designing scientific experiments to obtain the data needed, and for analysing and using them to support major decisions. The company employs more than 120 professional statisticians worldwide. They have the opportunity to apply their mathematical and statistical knowledge in an exciting and challenging career, which will ultimately lead to the production of major new medicines.

Graduates studying for a first degree will usually need to complete an M Sc in statistics to have sufficient knowledge to apply for one of the many statistics vacancies in the pharmaceutical industry. Glaxo Wellcome considers it important to invest in the education of statisticians and will provide scholarships again this year to enable students to study for an M Sc during the 2000/2001 academic year. These will consist of a maintenance grant (at least equivalent to that paid by government funding agencies - £8265 in London, £6620 outside London) together with all fees to allow fulltime study. Scholarship holders may wish to apply for employment at Glaxo Wellcome at the conclusion of the course, and will be considered for vacancies at that time.

One scholarship will be available to study on each of the following four courses which provide advanced training in statistics theory and practice. More information about the courses can be obtained from the websites and University Contacts:
