JOB:  Ph.D. STUDENTSHIP AT UNIVERSITY COLLEGE DUBLIN,
IRELAND

Applications are invited for a funded 3-year Ph.D. studentship
sponsored by Enterprise Ireland to conduct research on cost
implications in software reliability.  The object of the research is to
determine optimal release times for computer software based on
stochastic models for failure detection and cost models in the
development of software. Interaction with computer software
development firms is an integral part of the project. The research will be
done under the direction of Professor Philip J. Boland in the UCD
Department of Statistics.

STATISTICAL EXPERIENCE & JOB DESCRIPTION
The successful applicant will have a good honours degree in statistics
&/or mathematics. Prior knowledge of software reliability is not
necessary although some basic knowledge of stochastic processes
would be desirable. He/she will register for a postgraduate degree at
University College Dublin commencing in September 2000. The
successful student may be required to take some courses in Statistics as
part of the programme.

The Department of Statistics at University College Dublin is a vibrant
department with research activity in many diverse areas of applied and
theoretical statistics including: reliability theory, biostatistics, medical
statistics, pharmacokinetic modelling, experimental design (with
applications in veterinary medicine, agriculture and ecology), official
statistics, actuarial statistics, statistical education and time series. The
department runs undergraduate degree programmes in statistics and
actuarial studies as well as a taught M.Sc./M.A. degree programme.

FUNDING
The studentship includes payment of fees (half fees for non-EU
nationals) in addition to a scholarship of IR£6600.00 per year.
Opportunities exist for extra funding in the form of tutorials, grading etc.
