Research Assistant in Statistics

Applications are invited for a position of Post-Doctoral Research
Assistant in the Department of Probability and Statistics, University
of Sheffield. This three-year post is funded by a research grant
from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council.

The project is to develop novel Bayesian statistical methods to link
the condition of water distribution mains to their performance. The
problem is of considerable importance to the water industry, and this
project is supported by 7 water companies/organisations in England and
Northern Ireland. Advanced Bayesian modelling will be used, and will
include Markov random fields on networks and MCMC computation. The
project will be supervised by Professor Tony O'Hagan, with input from
Professor Adrian Saul (Civil and Structural Engineering) and
representatives of the water industry partners.

This is an exciting opportunity for someone keen to engage in research
on leading edge statistical methods with a clear practical focus.
Applicants should have, or expect soon to have, a PhD in Statistics or
in another field where they have gained substantial experience of
advanced statistical methods. Strong mathematical skills are
essential, as are good communication skills and a willingness to
contribute fully to a team effort. Some prior experience with
Bayesian methods will be advantageous but not essential.

For further information or informal enquiries, please contact Tony
O'Hagan direct by email ([log in to unmask]).

Applications, including the names and addresses of two referees, may
be sent by email to Tony O'Hagan or by post to the Personnel
Department, University of Sheffield, Firth Court, Western Bank,
Sheffield S10 2TN, UK. Please quote job reference R2036.
Applications close on 27 June 2000.
