THE LONDON SCHOOL OF ECONOMICS
AND POLITICAL SCIENCE

LECTURER / SENIOR LECTURER / READER IN DECISION SCIENCES

Applications are invited for an established appointment depending on
qualifications and experience, as Reader, Senior Lecturer, or Lecturer in
the Department of Operational Research. This post is to fill a vacancy that
has arisen following a lecturer leaving to lead decision analysis in a US
consulting firm. For this appointment, the prime priority area is decision
analysis, for which the key figures at present are our Visiting Professors
Larry Phillips and Carlos Bana e Costa. In particular we need to secure the
ability to provide teaching in this area, which is central to the MSc. in
Decision Sciences.

Operational Research has been established at LSE for over 40 years, and
became an independent Department in 1997. The Department's strength, in
teaching and research, is its expertise across the spectrum from 'hard' to
'soft' methods. The Department runs an undergraduate degree in Management
Sciences, and two masters programmes in Decision Sciences and in Operational
Research.

The department's teaching was rated 'excellent' by the HEFCE quality
assessment in 1994. In the 1996 Research Assessment Exercise the two units
of assessment in which departmental members were entered were rated 5* and
5. There is an opportunity for the appointee to collaborate with the
established research programme in Risk and Regulation, & with LSE Health.

The closing date is 1st February 2000. It is intended to hold interviews in
March and that the successful candidate will be appointed from September.
