Collaborative research student at the Department of Statistics and the National Microelectronics Research Center University College Cork, Ireland ------------------------------------------------------------------ FUNDING AVAILABLE: leading to PhD in Statistics Starting date: October 1st 2000 We are seeking a highly motivated PhD student to join EU-funded collaborative research projects at the National Microelectronics Research Center (NMRC) in Cork, Ireland. The research area is on the statistical aspects associated with the development of chemical and biological sensors, for example in o Development of sensors for screening of antibiotic resistance in mycobacterium o Sensor arrays for environmental, generic and routine detection of pesticides The sensors under consideration typically generate functional type data, which lead to interesting statistical problems, for example in the experimental design to generate the calibration data and the deconvolution problem to estimate relevant parameters. The Donal McCarthy Postgraduate Research Scholarship in Statistics ------------------------------------------------------------------- Central Statistics Office, Ireland has funded this scholarship to promote university research in the area of official statistics. It is valued at c. 10,000 euros per annum. Applicants for this scholarship should have (at least) a Second Class Honours primary degree in Statistics or a related quantitative discipline, and have an interest in methodology for applications to Official Statistics. Relevant topics would include survey sampling, multivariate methods, time series, and small area estimation. The holder of the award will carry out research leading to the award of a postgraduate (MSc or PhD) degree. The scholarship is funded by the Central Statistics Office (http://www.cso.ie).
