Thanks to all who replied. The web site given below is part of the ONS's "statstore" of datasets in demography and many related areas. I have downloaded the table that you see, which contains regional and UK rates by age-group and sex. The only disadvantage from my point of view is that the age groups are rather coarse (10-yr). But some judicious smoothing will sort that out. I plan to construct a Stata dataset of the data. If anyone would like a copy please email me direct. Patrick.
