New posts at the MRC Biostatistics Unit, Cambridge The MRC Biostatistics Unit aims to advance medical science by the development and application of statistical methodology. It is the UK's leading biostatistics research institution, and comprises a number of internationally renowned statisticians. Following the appointment of Professor Simon Thompson as director, four new appointments to the Unit will be made. The appointees will contribute to a programme of statistical research of relevance to large scale clinical trials and meta-analysis. Areas of current interest include analysis of cluster randomised trials, statistical issues in health economic assessment, longitudinal and process measures in clinical trials of complex interventions, missing data and non-compliance in randomised trials, and individualising predicted treatment benefit from the results of trials or meta-analyses. Two of these four posts are now being advertised: (i) A career-track appointment (ref: BSU/CT/300/1) will be made to take a leadership role in this research programme. The appointment will be for a six-year period, during which time the appointee will develop his/her research programme, and after which he/she will be considered for a tenured appointment. The appointee will have an excellent track record of research and publications in medical statistics, and have expertise in some of the areas listed above. An appointment in MRC band 2 is expected, with initial salary likely to be in the range 30,000 to 40,000 pounds. (ii) A post-doctoral research appointment (ref: BSU/PD/300/2) will be made in one of the research areas above. The appointment will be for three years, with the possibility of renewal for another three years. The person appointed will work with Simon Thompson and the career-track appointee. Preference may be given to those with an interest in statistical issues in health economic assessment. Applicants should have (or be submitting) a PhD, or have an MSc with some years of experience of research in medical statistics. An appointment in MRC band 4 is expected, with initial salary likely to be in the range 19,500 to 23,500 pounds.
