	The Veterinary Laboratories Agency (VLA) is an executive agency of the Ministry of Agriculture Fisheries and Food (MAFF). Our Risk Research Department is currently seeking to appoint a Mathematical Modeller. The post-holder will work in an expanding group of scientists, designing and developing risk assessment and mathematical models for use in international and national veterinary and public health.

	The successful candidate will lead the quantitative modelling within a team undertaking a risk assessment to evaluate the risk of the development of bovine tuberculosis within cattle herds in Great Britain. Other related projects will also be managed by the post-holder. Other aspects of the post include writing and presenting scientific reports and papers and reviewing and evaluating methodological developments in the field of risk analysis and mathematical modelling.

	Candidates should have a first degree in mathematics, mathematical biology, statistics, physics or engineering. A PhD in mathematical modelling or a similar quantitative subject is highly desirable. Applicants should have a general appreciation of biological and agricultural systems. Experience of Bayesian modelling would be particularly useful. Excellent written and oral communication skills are essential.

	This post is Pay Band D (Scientist) - L19,000 to L28,000 per annum; progression is performance related. Benefits include a non-contributory pension scheme and 25 days annual leave.
