How does a single laboratory numbering system in a combined sample reception
cause delays??

If everybody who previously entered patient details on to an IT system for
individual departments was employed in entering each request (which may well
embrace several departments) once rather than several times, the net
throughput of request input must increase thereby reducing hold-ups.

What are the objections from the haematologists?

APS-Unilabs has been operating a common sample reception with a single
numbering system for over 20 years. Barcodes for samples can incorporate a
suffix denoting the sample type that can be ignored by automated
instrumentation if required, but is valuable when retrieving samples that
have been filed.
