At the risk of being provocative.... why a 'vow of non-involvement'? does not such an approach devalue some of the points made? I fully endorse Richard's point about taking responsibilty for keeping oneself informed. It is part and parcel of the modern, healthy approach to CPD. The 'basic professional duties' referred to are as I see it intellectual ones of keeping oneself current and informed and it is no more unreasonable to expect people to pay for this out of their own pocket than it is to expect them to pay for their own membership of a professional organisation - simply a sign of who is truely interested in their profession. There will always be poorly funded and under resourced archives and consideration of them is and always will be (I hope) illustrated by the many alternative media and methods utilised by the SoA such as the journal, newsletter, conferences and courses as well as pay related membership charges! that's my two penn'oth worth!
