There are a few places left on this popular new workshop. Netskills Workshop: Content Management on the Web Using XML, Style Sheets, Metadata and Dynamic HTML 09:30 - 16:30 Wednesday 25th October 2000 University of Newcastle Web page creators are often frustrated by the limitations of HTML in delivering structured content in a presentable format. One of the drawbacks of HTML is that it can sometimes fail to satisfy as either as good presentational language, or a good way of structuring information. A number of new developments are at hand which will revolutionise how web content is created and managed, without the need for expensive tools or programming expertise. XML is much spoken about, but not widely understood, and its potential is untapped, along with Style Sheets in CSS or XSL and the use of Metadata, RDF and dynamic HTML. This workshop explains and investigates these new developments both in concept and in practice, providing a basis from which web authors can start to explore a new era of web content creation and management. This workshop is aimed at anyone who has created web pages in HTML and wishes to learn about new developments in content creation and management. It is not a web server or systems administration workshop. Workshop Content: The workshop will comprise presentations, demonstrations and hands-on sessions with opportunities for questions and discussion. Participants will each receive a workbook which contains workshop exercises, presentation slides and other relevant materials. Topics covered will include: * A beginners guide to XML (the eXtensible Markup Language) * Using Style Sheets to separate content from appearance. * Creating Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) for HTML and XML * The use of Metadata to specify content * Metadata in XML - RDF (the Resource Description Framework) * Dynamic HTML for browser detection and configurable delivery * Introduction to XSL (the eXtensible Style Language) * Transformations in XSL * Applications of XML including MathML, SMIL, CML * An overview of developments in linking with XLink By the end of the workshop participants will have: * Created XML elements and documents * Used Cascading Style Sheets to format HTML and XML pages * Created their own internal and external Style Sheets * Included Metadata in web pages * Submitted a page with Metadata to a search engine * Explored the use of dynamic HTML for content management * Used XSL to transform XML data on delivery * An awareness of other developments including RDF and XLink Workshop Requirements: Participants should have previously used the World Wide Web through a browser such as Netscape or Internet Explorer and MUST have authored simple Web pages using HTML. Knowledge of basic HTML tags such as those for including images and hypertext links is essential.
