Proofs for trade calendars for the 1880s (and probably the 1870s) can be
found in the Stationer's Hall Copyright material at the Public Record Office
(class COPY 1). Unfortunately this collection is not indexed and you may
have to go through many boxes to you find anything suitable.
Incidentally I recently found a trade calendar for the mid-1880s for a small
grocer's shop in Bourton-on-the-Water in a collection at the Society of
Genealogists. If Cotswolds grocers had such advertising material by the
1880s it would suggest that the practise was already widespread.
