Similarly in the 1862 Stoke-upon-Trent by-election, an hour
by hour analyse of the vote was produced and published.
There is clear evidence that this had an influence on the
result, because once it became apparent where the major
opposition to the Tory candidate lay, later voters put
their support behind the candidate most likely to beat him.
Given our crazy electoral system I do wonder if this
suggests that the sectret ballot has benefited the
Conservative Party far more than the Labour and Liberal
Parties. But, then can one generalise from one election
result?
As a side note, it must be added that Tory candidate's
support for the Confederacy in the US Civil War dis not do
his campaign much good!!!
