For those interested in the details of their own study area the book I
find most useful is:
Frederic A Youngs, Guide to the local administrative units of England,
Royal Historical Society, 1979, Vol 1 southern England, Vol 2 northern
England.
These two volumes contain an enormous amount of detailed information on
civil and ecclesiastical parishes, as well as other administrative units.
Not suprisingly it isn't perfect and for anyone interested in Surrey I
have a number of corrections.
