I think some of the above dates are not quite right (England & Wales):
UNIONS. An Act of 1782 allowed parishes to form Unions, but few did. Most
started after the Poor Law Act, 1834, and I believe some continued to exist
as late as the 1930s or 1940s but I have not yet found the date when the
Union ceased to exist in my own locality. Has no-one written a
comprehensive history of a Poor Law Union or of PL Unions?
PARISH COUNCILs (civil) were in existence long before 1894 although the Act
of 1894 (often referred to in those days as "the parish councils bill")
made them more formal and increased their powers a little.
RURAL SANITARY DISTRICTS were created under an Act of 1872 but I think
their boundaries coincided with the existing Boards of Guardians. They
ceased to exist when the 1894 Act came into force.
RURAL & URBAN DISTRICT COUNCILS did not cease to exist in 1972 but on 31
March 1974 when they were replaced by new (much larger) district councils
under the 1972 Act.
