7TH ISSEI (International Society for the Study of European Ideas)
CONFERENCE
APPROACHING A NEW MILLENNIUM: LESSONS FROM THE PAST, PROSPECTS FOR THE
FUTURE
Bergen, Norway, 14 - 18 August 2000
WORKSHOP: IMAGINING POST-WALL EUROPE: VISIONS OF THE "OLD" CONTINENT IN
CONTEMPORARY DRAMA, FICTION AND FILM
The workshop will focus on post-1989 representations of Europe in
fiction, drama and film. Special attention is to be paid to traditional
constructions of European identity and cultural divisions within the
"old"
continent and to the various ways in which such constructions and
divisions
resurface in the postmodern present. An emphasis is likewise to be
placed on
contemporary authors' (successful or unsuccessful) attempts to distance
themselves from those constructions and divisions and to make sense of
the
currently ambiguous process of Europe's political and economic
integration.
Topics include discovery, invention and reinvention of Europe,
gender
difference in discourses of Europe, cultural divisions and
civilisational
clashes, myths of origins, myths of authenticity, "purity" and
hybridity,
inclusion and exclusion, idealisation and demonisation.
*** Abstracts (ca 100 words) are due by 5 January 1999.
