PLEASE FORWARD
After Seattle - What next?
Meeting Saturday 15th January Conway Hall, Red Lion Sq., London WC1
(nearest tube Holborn) 2pm -5pm
Speakers will include Barry Coates, Director of the World Development
Movement, and activists from the Nestle action.
Seattle was a major victory for the movement to Stop the Millennium
Round. The plans of the US and the EU governments - including Britain's
- would have massively increased global poverty, and stepped up attacks
on the environment and public services. The failure of their attempts
to armtwist, bribe, and bully 3rd World governments (and each other) is
a fundamental setback for the transnational corporations' "free trade"
agenda.
This victory was enabled by the massive N30 actions, which took place in
Seattle and elsewhere, such as the 75,000 who demonstrated in France,
Belgium, and Sweden, and the smaller actions which took place around the
world, including in Britain itself. The massive environmentalist,
student and labour movement mobilisations gave 3rd world governments the
confidence to tell Mike Moore and his backers where to go.
But the transnationals and their sponsoring governments are not letting
the grass grow under their feet and nor should we. Agriculture and
Services for example are part of the built-in WTO agenda, and therefore
are not dependent on the existence of a Millennium Round.
The US and EU governments are already using alternative mechanisms to
the WTO to achieve their ends. The Transatlantic Economic Partnership
aims to create a free trade area between the EU and the USA, with the
aim of eventually incorporating the rest of the world. They are not
going to give up on their agenda that easily.
One question we should act on urgently is the defence of 16 activists
who are in court facing conspiracy charges on February 22. Their crime?
- Climbing onto the roof of the Halifax Nestle factory and hanging out a
banner reading "People and Planet before Profit."
Come and discuss what to do in Britain and internationally.
