Two tenure track Assistant Professor positions
in Human-Computer Interaction
The department of Computing Science at Chalmers University of Technlogy
and Göteborg University, Göteborg, Sweden, invites applications for two
tenure track Assistant Professor positions. The area of interest for these
positions is Human-Computer Interaction. The successful applicants should
have a recent PhD in Computing Science or related discipline and
documented experience of teaching and research within the HCI area.
The new Assistant Professors will participate in research and undergraduate
teaching within the HCI area. The positions are for four years, after which
candidates who meet the requirements for promotion to Associate Professor
will be promoted to a permanent position.
Undergraduate teaching in HCI is rapidly growing in the department with
presently more than 20 students annually majoring in the field. Basic HCI
courses are parts of the curriculum of several undergraduate programs both
at Chalmers and Göteborg university.
The department of Computing Science employs approximately 35 faculty
and 25 PhD students. Research interests span many fields of computer
science; see http://www.cs.chalmers.se/Cs/Research/ for an overview. The
department expects to grow rapidly the next few years as Chalmers
is dedicated to strengthen its activities in information technology. The HCI
area is one where additional resources will become available; the present
positions are a first step in this direction.
The application should include a short description of the applicant's pedagogic
and scientific skills and experiences, curriculum vitae and copies of relevant
scientific publications.
The department seeks actively to increase the number of women staff
members. Salary levels are determined individually.
Further information can be obtained from the department head Christer
Carlsson ([log in to unmask]). Since we foresee further expansion
within this field, we also encourage both more experienced people, interested
in more senior positions, and those interested in joining us at a later stage,
to
contact us.
HCI activities in the Göteborg area.
Interest in HCI activitites at Chalmers and Göteborg University is growing
also outside the department of Computing Science, thus offering many
opportunitites for collaboration. We mention in particular
- Chalmers Medialab (http://www.medialab.chalmers.se/), which
functions as a resource for Chalmers in the area of applied information
technology, in particular digital media.
- Innovative Design - Chalmers, (http://www.design.chalmers.se), a
strategic initiative at Chalmers to foster activities in design in a broad
sense.
- the Department of Human-Centered Technology at Chalmers,
(http://www.mot.chalmers.se/dep/kt/) which pursues studies and
analysis of the relationship between man and technology from a user
perspective.
- the Viktoria Institute, (http://www.viktoria.adb.gu.se), a research,
development, and educational institute founded by Göteborg
University, Chalmers and West Swedish companies and public
organizations.
- the Interactive Institute (http://www.interactiveinstitute.se), a
multi-disciplinary research institute within the field of digital media
with studios at several sites in Sweden.
Among potential industrial collaborators in the Göteborg area are
multinational companies such as Volvo and Ericsson, as well as a large
number of smaller companies within the IT sector. As an example of the
latter, with its origin in research at our department, we mention Spotfire
(http://www.spotfire.se).
Four identical applications, marked with reference number 209/99, should
be sent to the Registrar, Chalmers University of Technology, SE-412 96
Göteborg, Sweden, to be received no later than February 1, 2000.
Trade union representatives: SACO Christian Högfors, TCO Anders Olausson,
SEKO Conny Sjöström.
